The 2013 Art on R Mountain is almost here!

at the Ruffner Mountain Nature Center
Admission to Art on R Mountain is free.
There will be over 40 artists selling their wares and art at the show.
There is also entertainment and activities for the whole family. So come
spend the day with us at the beautiful Ruffner Mountain and perhaps find art to add to your collection!
On April 5th starting at 5:30 join us at the
featuring delicious food by our Iron Chefs of East Lake,
meet the Art on R Mountain artists and
stay for a jazz concert by the Cleve Eaton Duo.
Artists looking to be a part in the 3rd annual Art on 'R Mountain art show can download the application below.
The East Lake Arts District presented the second annual Art on R
Mountain art show, the first art show of 2012 in Birmingham, at the
Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve on Saturday, April 7, 2012. 50 artists
from across the southeast took part in the show and organizers estimated
over 1,500 people attended the one day event.
The East Lake Arts District presents $650 prizes to three artists
judged as Best in Show. This year's judge was Jim Neel, Chair of the Art
Department at Birmingham Southern College. The third place prize, The
Maystein Founder's Award, named for Asher Maystein, an East Lake
resident and founder of the East Lake Arts District was presented to 2D
mixed media artist, Susan Shoemaker of Irondale, AL. The second place
prize, The Alabama Art Supply Award, named for the sponsor of the second
and third place awards, was presented to Athens, Georgia, jewelry
artist, Charles Pickney. Ms. Shoemaker and Mr. Pickney were presented
ribbons and gift certificates from Alabama Art Supply.
Debra Riffe, a print-maker, from Birmingham, AL, won the first place
prize, The Jane Conkell Memorial Award. This award is named for
life-long South East Lake resident and long serving South East Lake
neighborhood president Jane Conkell. Mrs. Conkell was one of several
neighborhood residents instrumental in saving Ruffner Mountain from
development and the establishment of the Ruffner Mountain Nature
Preserve. Ms. Riffe was awarded the purple ribbon and a $250 cash prize.
All three artists are also automatically entered into the April 6,
2013, Third Annual Art on R Mountain show.
Besides artists, Art on R Mountain attendees were entertained by
guitarist and vocalist Robert Huffman, The Robinson Elementary School
Choir, belly dancers from Devyani Dance Troupe, and the Bards of
Birmingham, a youth Shakespeare troupe located in South East Lake.
Local corporations and civic groups that contributed to make Art on R
Mountain possible include: Regions Bank, Burr & Forman, Ruffner
Mountain Nature Preserve, Rare Transportation, Homewood Gourmet, Coca
Cola Bottling Company United, Express Oil Change, Burch Corporation,
Alabama Art Supply, the South East Lake Neighborhood Association, the
East Lake Neighborhood Association, and the Honorable Kim Rafferty, City
Councilor, District 2. Also, a host of individuals, too many to name,
gave not only financially, but volunteered to work and made this show a
success.
The East Lake Arts District, a neighborhood 501(c)(3) organization,
uses the visual and performing arts as a means of promoting
revitalization and a renewed awareness for the East Lake community,
enhancing quality of life and celebrating the cultural diversity of the
residents of East Lake.
